Letters

Dear Contributor to I Am Jewish:

On behalf of Judea and Ruth Pearl, we would like to update you on the
extraordinary continuing response to I Am Jewish: Personal Reflections
Inspired by the Last Words of Daniel Pearl and to again thank you for
taking part in this important project.

This month, I Am Jewish was named the 2004 National Jewish Book Award
winner in the Anthologies category. Since 1948 the Jewish Book Council,
which serves as the co-ordinating body of Jewish literary activity in North
America, has annually presented its prestigious awards to authors and
editors of books of exceptional merit in a variety of Judaic subjects.

I Am Jewish has also become the motivating force behind an international
movement. In our last letter to you, we suggested using I Am Jewish--both
the book and the statement--as a point of contemplation during the High
Holy Days. Dozens of congregations around the world, from Boston to San
Francisco, from Chicago to Denver to Las Vegas, from London to Singapore,
incorporated I Am Jewish into their programs and discussions during
Selichot services. Others used it as the basis for their Rosh HaShanah, Kol
Nidre and Yom Kippur sermons. Many rabbis and educators asked community
members to write their own reflections on the words "I am Jewish" and read
them to their congregations. One rabbi told us that "the five statements
offered by five volunteers, whether taken individually or collectively,
were just breathtaking in their power and their poignancy."

Please be in touch if you are interested in organising an "I am Jewish"
event for your congregation or for a wider community audience. We are
committed to expanding the "I am Jewish" movement throughout the world and
will be happy to help guide you through the process of creating your own
special event at any time of year.

Judea and Ruth Pearl continue to speak before capacity audiences at
high-profile venues. Throughout the spring and summer, people have gathered
to listen to the Pearls talk about their unique reaction to Danny's murder:
reaching out to teach people of all faiths about what it means to be
Jewish, thereby strengthening the Jewish community. This November Judea
will read from I Am Jewish at major Jewish Book Fairs throughout the United
States, and in December he will headline an I Am Jewish event sponsored by
Boston's Combined Jewish Philanthropies at which several of the book's
contributors will participate. Other events are already being scheduled for
2005; for details visit the website of the Daniel Pearl Foundation:
www.danielpearl.org.

I Am Jewish continues to receive outstanding, innovative media coverage. The
Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles published several excerpts from the
book during the High Holy Days, while the Jerusalem Post published online
in English a special supplement of excerpts. Yediot Acharonot, a leading
newspaper in Israel, published an online supplement of excerpts in Hebrew.
Both the Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania) Post-Gazette and the Toledo (Ohio) Blade
have published original reflections on the words "I am Jewish" that were
written by people from those cities.

Interest in I Am Jewish is so strong that we have already gone back to
print five times--and have a sixth printing planned for early 2005.

Because of your gracious participation in this project--and in anticipation
of the Hanukkah season--Jewish Lights again will extend to you the special
contributor opportunity to purchase copies of I Am Jewish at 50 percent off
of the retail price of $24.99 (U.S. funds) until November 15, 2004. Please

power and depth of experience that comes with speaking the words, "I am
Jewish."
